W02 Reflection: Choosing a Business

This week we reflected on a few different scenario's for starting a business.

1) After reading the first scenario, we were asked to choose between a) Selecting a product first, then business model OR  b) Selecting a business model and then choosing a product. I chose the first option.  Why did I choose this? I chose this because I felt that it is better to know what you are selling first before you can move forward with anything else. Choosing a business model first wouldn't work in my opinion.

We were also asked to compare chess vs. snowboards, and used the Google Ad Keyword Finder in helping to search statistics for words related to chess and snowboards. I admit that I have never used this tool, nor did  I know anything like this existed, which was cool. Now I know how business use these specific key words to drive people to their websites.

We were then asked what we would choose to sell- chess vs. snowboards. Most of the class chose chess, due to the high competition of the snowboarding industry. There was some hesitation for choosing chess though, mostly due to the fact that you wouldn't be able to sell enough chess boards to make a substantial profit. Some were also concerned about it not being popular enough to drive people to the site. I also chose chess, and thought that it might be cool to incorporate some "collabs" with chess masters and expert players. This may boost views to the site. I don't really play chess now, nor did I get into it much as a kid, but it could blow up again some day if something about it went viral on social media, or the youth found it to be cool again.
